raising awareness for families affected by rare disease

Dave proctors #outrunrare story

Dave Proctor lives south of Calgary with his wife and three kids. He commutes to the city to practice at his busy Sports Massage Therapy clinic and in his spare time runs extreme distances. He is the Guinness world record holder for furthest distance run on a treadmill in 24 hours (260.4kms) and is going for the Cross Canada speed record next year (Covid Dependant!) while raising awareness for families affected by Rare Disease #OutRunRare.

My skill set in this sport is mentally locking in and convincing myself that pain does not exist but replaced with joy and gratitude.
— Dave Proctor

Dave’s son Sam has a rare disease and after developing normally as an infant at 13 months and 2 years suffered a neurological episode that caused paralytic hypotonia. Dave tells us about the 6 year journey of figuring out what rear disease Sam has and how Canada is the only developed country that doesn’t have a Rare Disease strategy. Dave decided to bring awareness about rare diseases and help people who needed the support like they did. Instead of starting a disease specific foundation they decided to bring all rare diseases together because 1 in 12 people in Canada have a rare disease. With Nicolette training for her 22 Million, across Canada run and bike, they discuss Dave’s attempt last year that was disrupted by injury, running for a cause and the mental game of Ultra Running.

“The mind only knows two things, the pictures you draw for it and the things that you tell it” dave proctor
